I don’t know about you guys but my kids LOVE sticks! Every time we walk to a park, they are grabbing sticks. Join us in changing a simple stick into simple fun!!
I let them pick them up and walk with them most of the time. My rule is, you can hold the stick if you are walking and being safe with it.
You know your kids best, so it is up to you if you feel comfortable with your kids playing with sticks. This is a fun activity that gets them moving and having fun. You only need 3 materials and not too much space to do it!
They can develop lots of great skills from the Witch Broomstick Activities!
Skills Your Kids can Learn:
Writing and Fine Motor Skills-when they are writing with their broomstick
Listening Skills-when they are making music with the broomstick
Gross Motor-when they are throwing the broomstick to make it fly
Social Skills-learning it’s okay for someone else to win a game and learning to keep trying even if they don’t get it at first
Math Skills-you could have them measure how far their broomsticks flew
Hand, eye coordination-aiming for a bush to throw the broomstick
Comprehension Skills-following directions of the rules of the witch broomstick activity and from creating a story about the witch broomsticks.
Materials:
Stick
Pine Needles
Twistie Tie
Glue (Optional-you can use glue to help the pine needles stick together better. We just used the twistie ties because I knew we would be throwing them and the twistie tie kept them together well enough, and if they fell out we had fun putting them back on the stick)
Paint (Optional-you can paint your broomstick a fun color)
Clay (Optional-you can add clay at the tip to prevent getting poked. H M and J were good about using the broomstick safely so we did not need the clay.)
Instructions To Make Witch Broomstick:
You won’t believe how simple this is! That’s why I love this activity!!
Prep: While at a park, Collect some pine needles and one stick for each child.
Step 1: Put a small bunch of pine needles together and pinch them close together with your finger.
Step 2: Use your fingers to twist tie them close together around the tip of the stick.
You’re Done!
Optional Steps:
Paint the stick a fun color.
Add glue on the inside of pine needles around the stick to really glue the pine needles together. We did not do this because we did not want to wait for it to glue; we just wanted to play with our Witch Broomsticks!
Witch Broomstick Activity Ideas Great for Preschoolers:
Witch Broomstick Flying Outdoor Activity:
How far can your witch broomstick fly?
H and M thought of aiming for a bush in our backyard and seeing if their broomsticks could land in the bush. They made sure to stand side by side and see who could throw it farther. They had so much fun making their broomsticks fly.
Toddler J was not ready for this activity so below we share some fun activities he created with the Witch Broomstick that are fun for toddlers too!
*Safety with any pokey objects for young kids. Please watch and make sure they aim away from themselves or others. You know your kids best if you feel they can do this safely and have fun, they can fly their broomsticks.
Make Believe and Create Stories about a Witch on a Broomstick.
While we were making our broomsticks, H and M started pretending they were princesses talking about their castles. At first, M liked playing with her stick without the pine needles. H liked keeping her pine needles on the stick and pretending they were people with fun hair:)
Witch Broomstick Activities that are fun for both Toddlers & Preschoolers:
Draw with the broomstick.
Toddler J thought of this one! He loved taking the broomstick and drawing shapes in the dirt! H joined in too!
Make Music with the Broomstick.
J thought of this too! He loved tapping the broomstick on his play structure and dancing! * I was there to supervise to keep him safe:)
Painting the Witch Broomstick:
Mommy thought the Witch Broomsticks looked perfectly cute just plain brown. H and M thought of painting their broomsticks to make them unique. H painted hers purple and M painted hers white.
