Being a mom is all consuming and we can easily burn out. It is in these moments, God is calling us to the table to let Him pour His good works into us, and He has revealed to me many creative ways to refresh.
As a first time mom of twins and now still as a mom of twins plus one, I am blown away by all of the time in the day and night that I am needed by my children. Sometimes motherhood can leave you feeling like this…
In these moments, I feel God reminding me to take care of myself and listen to my heart to be able to take care of my family. Sometimes that means taking a coffee break with a new mom friend!
P.S. Hi! I’m Tracy Murdock, author of upcoming children’s book “Zoe in Double Trouble”, lover of God and teacher made mom to twins plus one, momspiration writer & speaker in your twin mom groups on @yourtwinmom on IG or your twin mom group on FB or your twin mom on Twitter group!! We’d love for you to join Your Twin Mom Family for more connection!
Recently, I had the great pleasure to share “Zoe in Double Trouble” at one of my Twinterviews with F.C. Shaw also known as Farah, a homeschooling mother and an author of a fun and mysterious children’s book series including one of our favorites, “Sherlock Academy” (especially with the main character being a sibling of 2 sets of twins in his family) geared to kids 3rd-6th grade. You can check out more about her here at her blog “Project: Creative Living”, her FCSHAW website, IG @authorfcshaw, or email her at firstname.lastname@example.org!
Although we came together to talk about writing, we couldn’t help but start off talking about our children and how to manage it all while taking time for creative self-care.
We both talked about how our creative dreams have given us an outlet that energizes and refreshes us in the trenches of motherhood.
Here are some great tips in creative Self-Care for moms:
Being Tired is Normal:
It is not about what we feel we alone can handle as moms. It is about coming to the table and showing God our weaknesses, then asking for His help to follow the dreams he puts in our hearts. Both Farah and I talked about having writing dreams at really crazy motherhood seasons in our life. But He has led us both in ways that with His loving guidance has enriched our hearts and our families.
Judges 7:9: In the middle of the night, God called Gideon “Get up and go against the camp because I am going to give it into your hands.”
Know the Values God puts in Your Heart:
Farah highlighted success as being something that is based on our personal values and what our hearts hope to see come out of our actions. For some it may be all about the freedom to express your creativity and for others it may be more about connecting with others. I have strong values of motherhood and spending time with my kids but also for creative expression that uplifts and inspires us in love!
Be Honest about Your Dreams:
For Farah, God put her writing dream in her heart about 10 years ago and she moved forward fearlessly. She is now a published author of many great children’s books. She has gone on book tours and loved involving her children along the way. Her husband is her number one fan joining her and encouraging her on the way. It took a ton of courage for me to be honest with my family about writing “Zoe in Double Trouble” and since God is the one who put it in my heart, I knew He would guide me as I shared this dream with the world. He brought wonderful people like Farah along the way!
Invest in your Dreams:
Farah shared about a BIG transition she made in her heart from wanting to be a writer to seeing herself as a writer. This has shined through in her books. I could relate as I made the transition from dreaming to write to being a writer this year and said “yes” to a mentor program with a best-selling author Sheri Fink! Knowing how valuable writing has been in our lives, Farah and I talked about choosing to invest time in writing.
Create a Self-Care Routine:
Since Farah loves to write, she makes it a part of her day every day as her kids do rest time. I fit it in the morning or at night. We both make creativity and writing a part of our days, our routines and it gives us energy to keep up with all of the other parts of motherhood and family life.
Surround Yourself with What & Who You Love!
Farah’s favorite thing about taking time to attend writing conferences is being surrounded by a tribe “writers” just like her and I couldn’t agree more. Having a coffee date with her filled my self-care cup and fueled my writing fire! Attending writing classes and working with a creative group like one in Recapture Self Village led by Beryl Ayn Young helped me push past mom guilt and see how important this dream was for me. This gave me the focus on my dreams as both an illustrator and a writer, so I could confidently invest in courses and tools to help my path as an illustrator.
Even after thinking I went bananas at first, my hubby created this writing corner for me! A great place for refreshment and creativity…all because I was honest with him about my dream to write children’s books like “Zoe in Double Trouble”!
Dreams Come in All Forms:
I love how Farah brought up the multitude of ways that we can dream and be creative, whether it be as writers, designers, illustrators, teaching….whatever your creative heart brings to you. She is so passionate about uplifting others in their creative endeavors that she started a blog, celebrating the many different themes of creativity. My husband thought I was crazy because I loved learning about photography and writing and illustrating and kids arts and crafts and baking and especially creative mothering and NOW I am seeing how it is all coming together:)
Live Outside the Box:
Farah brought up a beautiful point in that God created us to be multi-dimensional and have the courage to be more than what it says on paper about us. We discussed how God wants us to hear Him and grow nearer to Him as we listen and faithfully step forward into new creative adventures. If I lived in a box just to make others happy, I would constantly have a tummy ache! It feels so good to be me because I know this is who God is calling me to be! Yes I love to illustrate and yes I love to write and no I did not go to school for that in particular but thanks to being a twin mom and my 3 kids have brought me, I am so passionate about writing children’s books, I have learned a TON to do it!
Model Following our Dreams to our Kids:
As writers, Farah and I both love to write, read, talk about Jesus, be loving…it all leads to greatness in our children’s hearts. When we are following what dreams God puts in our hearts-we are showing them to bravely seek our dreams holding Gods hand the whole way! What a wonderful gift to give our children?! Show them they can follow God’s lead in their dreams and their life can be filled with blessings! If we want out kids to be creative, be loving, and follow their dreams then we need to model this to our children.
Go for dreams fearlessly in God’s Timing:
Farah and I talked about how the key is taking time to listen to God. Sometimes it feels like we are going against the grain, feelings of guilt or “not enough” seep in and it’s knowing what Gods asks of you that helps you move forward in faith. Sometimes, God asks us to do something that seems untouchable, like bad timing, or like we are not ready and other times He asks us to take a break and give it to Him while we focus on another part of our dreams. Believe me, I tried to tell God there was no way I would have time to write with twins plus one under 3, but I just felt him saying keep moving in this uncharted path and now here I am with my first children’s book!
Take Care of Yourself Mom!
I have 5 Ws that help me with Mom Self-Care:
From the beginning of motherhood, I was writing and illustrating and who knew it would lead to my first children’s book “Zoe in Double Trouble”! Still to this day, I enjoy writing to my twins plus one in their little journals, and writing prayers to God. It’s so helpful to set a time of the day to do something you love. Sometimes the kids are involved and other times I love that time when it’s just me and God to start the day or take a moment in the middle of the day.
Walking my twins in their double stroller from 3 weeks on, has given me so much peace and helped me clear my mind for creativity. I always return home feeling refreshed and hopeful for the future. Plus, I feel excited that I just did something positive for my children as they were able to rest or get fresh air and learn about their environment. Sometime walking out and about around town with family or a friend can make all of the difference too!
KLOVE is a huge peace bringer for me. I love to hear gospel music reminding me and my family of all of the love God has for us. I also love singing middle of the night songs filled with praise from the corner of my nursery. Singing prayers over my babies as I rock them back to sleep is soothing and filled with blessings. It helps me love who God created me to be.
On my wedding day, I remember a dear friend telling me to take a moment and look up at my wedding and at my husband before I walked down the isle. I wanted to make sure to soak up the moment before the wedding rush took over. The same goes for motherhood, I love to sit back and watch my kids through my camera lens, taking their pictures as they grow…in messy and really sweet moments too. Photography pauses the chaos and highlights the blessings for my heart.
Take time to wonder and daydream about your dreams or about your ideas and discover what’s important to you. I love to wonder about new children’s book ideas, wonder about new kids activities that help my kids love to learn and be ready for Kindergarten. When you take time to wonder, you are taking time to reflect on what’s important to you and making time in your day for that! Wondering gave me the passion to dig deep into writing, illustrating, and sharing “Zoe in Double Trouble” with you all here at Your Twin Mom!
I LOVE Kids Activities like art with kids and being my children’s first teacher so I enjoy making that a way to spend quality time with them and sharing something I love with them!
I was so thankful for this time with Farah and am even more pumped for another mom friend and more creative writing adventures in the future! You can check out more about her here at her blog “Project: Creative Living”, her FCSHAW website, IG @authorfcshaw, or email her at email@example.com!
